Single entrance exam for MBA from 2013

The All India Council for Technical Education has decided to conduct a common entrance exam – CMAT (Common Management Admission Test) for admission in MBA and PGDM programs from 2012- 2013. While CMAT will be one of the other management exams taking place in 2012, the council wants all the colleges to admit students based on CMAT score from 2013 to reduce the pressure on students to take numerous exams. The decision to conduct all-India Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) was taken in a very recent AICTE executive council meeting.
With every college, private associations and even states holding their own entrance exam, the pressure increases on the students and the parents. To free parents and students of the emotional and financial burden, CMAT exam will be conducted and the scores will be accepted by all the AICTE approved institutes.  Admission to nearly 4000 colleges offering MBA programs and 500 colleges offering PGDM program will take place on the basis of CMAT scores.
However, autonomous and independent B-schools such as IIMs (Indian Institute of Management) will continue to conduct the Common Admission Test (CAT).  Individual entrance tests can also hold their individual entrance examination.
Sources reveal that AICTE is yet to work out the modalities of holding CMAT but is very keen on holding one entrance exam since they are concerned about the quality of students entering the MBA program through taking numerous entrance exams with different level of difficulties.
Highlights:
  • CMAT to be conducted by AICTE for admission in MBA and PGDM programs.
  • CMAT to be held in 2012 also, though from 2013 admission will be based only on CMAT score.
  • IIMs and deemed universities can hold their own entrance exams.
