No hike in diesel prices any time soon, reveal top govt sources

New Delhi:  As the UPA government is under attack for the fourth petrol hike this year and is struggling hard to bring down the prices, sources have told NDTV that there will not be any hike in the prices of diesel in the near future.

Top government sources say that it's a politically difficult situation as several states are going to polls in the coming year. And hike in diesel prices usually pushes up the prices of food items particularly the vegetables and fruits because the transportation costs go up.

The decision to increase petrol prices by Rs 1.82 a litre last week provoked a confrontation with Mamata Banerjee, who is the biggest partner in the union government after the Congress.

There has been a 40 per cent hike in petrol prices in the last one year.
