Facebook helps police get their hands on ATM thief

Kagdapith police on Thursday arrested a man accused in an ATM theft case registered with them over three month ago. Rajesh Tripathi who hails from Madhya Pradesh was caught with the help of social networking site, Facebook. Two others accused in the case had been arrested earlier.
Tripathi had put up his personal details and photos on Facebook through which his travel agent and another accused in the case identified him to the cops. Tripathi had taken the agent's help to book a train ticket from Patna to Udhna station in Surat. Based on this information, Kagdapith police reached the railway station in Surat and with help from railway officials there, nabbed Tripathi.
The theft came to notice in July when retired school clerk, Karsan Adhiyal, filed a complaint stating that he was relieved of his pension money amounting to Rs1.98 lakh by a gang of ATM thieves. Adhiyal had stated that when he inserted his ATM card into the machine at an AXIS Bank ATM, the power went off.
A person standing inside the ATM, later identified as Ashok Gupta, had told Adhiyal that the ATM would not be operational for another two days. He had further advised Adhiyal to go to the main branch of the bank and register a complaint regarding the same.
Disappointed, Adhiyal left the ATM and registered a complaint with Kagdapith police about the "lost" ATM card. Investigation revealed that the power going off was no coincidence as the power supply had been cut off by a person who was part of a gang of ATM thieves. Using CCTV footage of the ATM centre, the police had identified Ashok Gupta and nabbed him from Gandhinagar within days of the incident.
After Gupta was questioned by the police, he named one of his accomplices, one Kishore Nahiya, who was also arrested. However, Tripathi had made good his escape. Nahiya then pointed out Tripathi's travel agent who identified him through Facebook in front of the cops.

Rahul Gandhi may be Cong working president soon

Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi is likely to be appointed the working president of the party soon to help his mother and party president Sonia Gandhi, setting the stage for a transition process at the helm of India's oldest party, informed party sources said.

"The delegation of higher responsibilities to Rahulji is a only a matter of when, not if," a senior Congress leader told agency.
"But knowing the style of Soniaji (Sonia Gandhi) and Rahulji, I feel all the dates and timeframes circulated are still speculative," he added. "It can happen soon, but how soon is anybody's guess."

Sonia, who had returned two months ago from the US after surgery for an undisclosed illness, but which was widely rumoured to be cancer, is said to be keen to delegate some of her administrative charges to Rahul, leaving herself free to look after policy matters alone.

Rahul, 41, currently is a general secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in charge of youth and student wings and a second-term Lok Sabha member from the family bastion Amethi.

Another party leader said the decision on the timing of Rahul's assumption will be taken in the family, basically between Sonia and Rahul and may be in consultation with Rahul's sister Priyanka Vadra.

"It is a close-knit family. During Sonia's illness it was the son and sister who were with her, by turns," he pointed out. "And if the transfer of power comes soon, it may have something to do with the health condition of Sonia, which appears near to normal if her participation in functions and party meetings are any indication."
Party sources said ardent Rahul fans in the election-bound Uttar Pradesh want him to be made the working president at the earliest and keep circulating dates like Nov 14 (birth anniversary of his great grandfather and India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru) and Nov 19 (the birth anniversary of his grandmother and former prime minister Indira Gandhi)

Meanwhile, another leader in New Delhi told IANS that Dec 28 - the 126th foundation day of the Indian National Congress - may be the date.

But other party leaders point out that both Sonia and Rahul will be busy in the coming weeks and months, leading the election campaign in the five states - Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Manipur.

"So if any new position for Rahul may be after the UP polls likely in February. Hope the Congress tally goes above the current 22 MLAs and Rahulji has something to show by then," said a leader, who also spoke without wishing to be named as it was a highly sensitive issue.

In fact, Rahul Gandhi had declared in Varanasi recently that he has begun the Uttar Pradesh campaign, though he is likely to conduct a 'padyatra' (walkabout) at Phulpur, the traditional constituency of the Nehru family Nov 14.

"Sonia is likely to address a election meeting in Uttarakhand next week," party sources said.

The fact that Sonia Gandhi is planning to campaign may reduces the chances of she handing over the presidentship to the son," a Youth Congress leader, who also did not want to be named, said. "At the most it can be working presidentship for him."

He said there had been several reports in the past years - during both the UPA-I and UPA-II - that Rahul may join the cabinet, which did not happen.

"Slowly and steadily have been the style of the mother-son duo's mantra," the youth leader said.

"Unless Soniaji's health warrants it. But after her return to India Sep 8 after the surgery, she had attended several Congress meetings and the meeting of the National Advisory Council (NAC) which she heads.

"She had been at the Ramlila celebrations as well as at the Shakti Sthal to pay tributes to Indira Gandhi on her assassination day."

But political circles point out that Rahul Gandhi's is engaging himself in important party affairs and the governmental matters recently.

Several Congress leaders, led by general secretary Digvijay Singh had been hailing Rahul as the future prime minister, while Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has mentioned Rahul as a future leader.

"Now Sonia is back and the the four-member committee abandoned. It is for her to decide the new role of Rahul," the Youth Congress leader added.

The concept of working presidents in the party is not new. Arjun Singh was working president at the time of Rajiv Gandhi and Kamalapati Tripathi was the party's first working president during the last years of Indira Gandhi.

Short-cut to happiness

Here are some sure-shot ways to tingle your happy hormones and look forward to long-term contentment.

Life isn’t always perfect and we all get down sometimes. However, there are many things you can do to improve your cheerfulness no matter what comes your way. From instance happiness boosts to techniques for long-term contentment, here are 10 top ways to boost your happiness.

Watch a comedy movie

We’ve all heard that laughter is the best medicine, and if you’re feeling down in the dumps then this is definitely true. Laughter can not only release pent-up emotions, but it also produces endorphins to boost your mood. Furthermore, research has found that laughing burns calories and boosts heart health too. To get your happiness levels up and boost your well-being too, pop in a comedy DVD next time you’re feeling down.

Eat yourself happy

While our outlook often changes based on external factors, if your mood is often low it may be that you are suffering from a nutrient deficiency. Research has found that having low levels of omega-3 fatty acids (which are essential for good brain health) increases risk of depression and negativity, while research by Kuopio University in Finland found that taking B vitamin supplements could help treat depression.

Get outdoors

Research has shown that low levels of vitamin D can contribute to mood disorders and depression. While vitamin D can be found in some foods or taken as supplement, one of the best sources of the mood-boosting vitamin is sunshine, which helps the body to create vitamin D. To boost your supplies of vitamin D, try to spend 10 to 15 minutes outdoors two to three times a week during the summer months.

Have a workout

For an instance happiness boost when you’re feeling blue, try hitting the gym or heading out for a brisk walk or run. Exercise releases chemicals in the brain such as endorphins and anandamide which can boost your mood and leave you feeling great. Not only that, exercise is also good for boosting confidence levels and increasing self-esteem.

Try aromatherapy

While many of us think of aromatherapy as an aid to relaxation, there are also many oils you can use to boost your happiness and help alleviate depression. Good aromatherapy oils to leave you uplifted include bergamot, geranium, neroli and jasmine. To lift your mood, try adding a few drops of these oils to water and burning on an oil burner, or create or purchase a room spray containing these essential oils.

Take a risk

To get the endorphins going and give your confidence a boost, try challenging yourself on a regular basis. While we don’t advise you to put yourself in any danger, if there is something you have been putting off for a while out of fear, now is the time to bite the bullet and see it through. Whatever your fear – be it asking out that special someone, joining a gym or applying for a job abroad – conquering your fears will leave you feeling great as well as helping you achieve your dreams.

Talk it out

If you are feeling seriously down and have been feeling low for a while, it is important to seek some help to get through this difficult phase. Seek out a friend or counsellor to listen to your problems, or visit your GP if you think you may be suffering from depression. No matter how bad you feel it is important to remember that you are not alone and there is no shame in seeking help. As they say, a problem shared is a problem halved, and even talking through your issues can help them seem less overwhelming.

Schedule in regular treats

To boost your happiness and satisfaction of life, it is important to make the most of those little things that boost your mood. Make a list of the day-to-day things that make you happy – such as having a catch-up with a friend, drinking hot chocolate in bed, or listening to your favourite song –and make sure you schedule one of these treats into every day. Planning regular treats not only gives you something to look forward to, but it can also subtly improve each day.

Do something selfless

It is easy to get bogged down in our own problems, so every once in a while it is good to put our issues to one side and help someone else feel happy instead. Whether you want to take on a long-term volunteering role, make a donation to charity, or improve the happiness of someone you know with a thoughtful note or gift, making an effort to make someone else smile is a great way to get some perspective, take your mind off your problems and increase your sense of purpose and fulfillment.

Set yourself a goal

Whether you aspire to get fit, obtain that dream job or learn how to cook something other than toast, most of us have something we long to achieve during our lifetime. Rather than putting off your dreams until a perfect moment which may never come, take some positive action and make a plan of how you will achieve your goal starting today. Having something to work towards will not only distract you from your problems, it will also reignite your passion for life and increase your excitement for the future.

Rs.1.80 per litre petrol hike from midnight

NEW DELHI: State-owned oil companies on Thursday have increased the prices of petrol by Rs 1.82 per litre from midnight. Earlier, the petroleum ministry said it is up to the oil companies to decide on raising the rates of the deregulated commodity.
After today's increase, petrol in Delhi will cost Rs 68.64 a litre. The rates will vary in other cities according to local levies.
This is the second hike in petrol prices in less than two months and it came on a day when the food inflation rose "dangerously" to 12.21 per cent for the week ended October 22.
"It is for them (oil companies) to decide. They will take a decision at a right time," Oil secretary G C Chaturvedi told reporters.

Slamming the hike, BJP leader Sushma Swaraj wrote on micro-blogging site Twitter, "Petrol price hiked again - another blow to the common man from an insensitive government."

Indian OilHPCL and Bharat Petroleum had last hiked petrol prices by Rs 3.14 a litre on September 16, when the rupee was valued at about Rs 48 per US dollar. The exchange rate is now over Rs 49 per dollar. State-owned oil firms Indian Oil, Hindustan Petroleum and Bharat Petroleum had earlier hiked petrol prices by Rs 3.14 a litre on September 16 when the rupee was ruling at about 48 to a US dollar. The local currency has depreciated further.

The rupee on Thursday closed at 49.14/15 against the US dollar.

The government had in June last year deregulated or freed petrol from all price controls but the retail rates have not moved in line with cost as high inflation rate forced the oil companies to seek 'advice' from parent oil ministry before revising rates.

Throwable Panoramic Ball Camera

Jonas Pfeil of the Berlin Technical University throws a panoramic ball camera near the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, October 28, 2011. The device contains 36 mobile phone cameras that take a picture at the highest point of the ball's trajectory. A computer program subsequently merges all pictures to a 360 degree image that can be viewed on a monitor by dragging the mouse in the desired direction. Pfiel developed the ball camera as a university thesis project. REUTERS/Thomas Peter (GERMANY - Tags: SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY)
Armed with 36 2-megapixel mobile phone camera modules, the camera contains an accelerometer that lets the exposure
be trigged at the calculated climax of flight, when it is hardly moving. the taking of a single photograph at the same moment
by multiple cameras prevents the ghosting effects that occur when creating a panorama by taking and stitching sequential images,
as well as the difficulties of recording a complete 360-degree view when using a tripod mount.

the sphere of the camera itself is printed on a 3D printer. its functionining is controlled via ATtiny and AVR microcontrollers,
with the governing program written in C, C++, QT, and openCV. images are downloadable from the device via USB.

pfeil and his team (kristian hildebrand, carsten gremzow, bernd bickel, and marc alexa) are currently seeking partners to produce the camera.

Samsung launches Galaxy Note in India at Rs 34,990

Samsung in India has announced the launch of its latest innovation - the Samsung Galaxy Note smartphone, which comes with a plethora of features that spill over to tablet type functionality as well. Targeted at people who need to do more with their smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Note offers the muscle of a smartphone in a form factor that is almost similar to that of a tablet.
The Galaxy Note is the first device to sport a 5.3 inch HD Super Amoled display. The display sports a native resolution of 800 x 1280 pixels and supports multi-touch and also comes with the S (Smart) Pen stylus that allows the users to go creative with all their might. The Galaxy Note runs the Android 2.3 Gingerbread along with a fully worked upon Samsung's TouchWiz user interface.
For powering this massive device, Samsung has chosen a dual-core 1.4 GHz Exynos microprocessor with Mali-400 MP dedicated graphics processor. The Galaxy Note also features a 1 GB RAM along with 16 GB memory onboard as storage memory. Its 8 megapixel camera comes with LED flash capable of recording 1080p full HD videos at 30 fps. There is a front facing 2 megapixel camera as well that can provide self-portrait shots and video calling.
The device was originally scheduled for a launch in the month of September itself but due to many reasons the launch of the device got delayed. But as the Samsung spokesperson has told sometime back about the launch of the Galaxy Note, the device is launched exactly on time as communicated back then.
The device is quite powerful as far as the specifications go but in terms of the price, it might be a downer for many buyers. The Samsung Galaxy Note has been priced at Rs 34,990 and this is the best price at which the device will be selling in the Indian market through Samsung stores and Samsung franchisee network for upcoming few weeks.
At present there are no network service providers tie ups given for this device but Samsung is in talks with a couple of service providers for a special tariff for the same and is expected to be announcing a few in the coming days.

Shake your legs for a strong heart

Studies have revealed that exercising your leg muscle is important for heart failure recovery
Leg muscle dysfunction is closely related to the severity of symptoms in heart failure patients, a new study has said.
According to researchers from the University of Leeds, doctors should not only treat the heart muscle in chronic heart failure patients, but also their leg muscles through exercise.
"Our main message is that exercise is safe and beneficial in patients with heart failure. By warming up the leg muscles properly, the exercise can be more comfortable and sustained for longer - affording great benefits for these patients," Dr Harry Rossiter from the University's Faculty of Biological Sciences, said.
The researchers measured responses of the heart, lungs and leg muscles following a moderate exercise warm-up in a series of experiments with chronic heart failure patients.
Using a near-infrared laser to measure the oxygenation of the leg muscles, they found that warm-up exercise increased the activity of skeletal muscle enzymes that control energy production.
However, this adaptation was less in patients with the most severe symptoms, showing that the heart failure condition had a negative impact on the normal function of the leg muscles.
"Many chronic heart failure patients complain of leg fatigue during exercise and this can prevent them from being active. Our study shows that by warming up properly, patients can improve the oxygenation and performance of their leg muscles, which is beneficial in promoting exercise tolerance," Rossiter said.
