On National Cancer Awareness Day, the Department of Radiotherapy, in collaboration with Department of Community Medicine, at Regional Cancer Center, PGIMER, will be holding a cancer awareness-cum-early detection camp at Indira Colony on Monday between 10.00 am and 2.00 pm.
Films will be screened regarding different causes of cancer and its early detection. The residents will be informed about the importance of early detection of mouth, breast and cervix cancer. A poster exhibition as well as a lecture has been arranged for the students of Government College, Sector 11, on November 15.
PGI receives nearly 6,000 new cancer cases every year and this figure is steadily increasing. About 80 percent of these patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage where control of the disease by any treatment is unlikely, say PGI doctors. This is due to a lack of awareness and poor socio-economic status of majority of the patients.
